Road bike helmet design optimized for aerodynamics

A form shaped by aerodynamics

For Mavic, we designed the Comete Ultimate, a road bike helmet developed with one primary goal in mind: to maximize aerodynamic performance without compromising comfort or ventilation.

The helmet’s shape has been engineered to improve airflow, optimize proportions, and control airflow around the shell. Inspired by automotive design, the air intakes and vents have been integrated into the design to address aerodynamic challenges while also becoming true signature elements of the French brand.

CFD and wind tunnel testing to achieve a streamlined design.

The development process relied on CFD simulations, 3D iterations, and wind tunnel testing at key stages of the project.
These analyses made it possible to adjust the helmet’s surfaces and geometry based on flow behavior—particularly to limit flow separation from the surface—thereby reducing air drag and saving valuable watts for the cyclist.

Aesthetics of the details and the helmet's visual Identity

We also focused on the details, aesthetics, and CMF choices to create an identity consistent with the Mavic brand.
The side contours help manage airflow, saving the cyclist up to 5 watts, while giving the helmet a distinctive visual signature.

Performance and comfort in the field.

Aerodynamic research goes hand in hand with work on ventilation, fit, and comfort—all of which are essential for supporting cyclists as they push themselves to their limits.
The result: a helmet in which performance, usability, and brand identity are integrated right from the design stage.
